Shot Put & Discus Half Turns- An Easy Throws Drill or a Distance Killer?

Nov 17, 2023

One thing I discovered over the years as a throws coach is that when an athlete learns a throwing drill, or a technical movement and it's not quite right, or just flat out wrong....

it take hundreds of reps using the correct biomechanics and drills to start getting the technique corrected & moving in the right direction.

Many times these bad technical habits are embedded in an athlete's throw through simple drills.

... and that leads me to a common drill that is used often because it's simple, but if taught wrong is deadly to a throw-   it's the half turn.

How you train a Half Turn properly & how you train the proper movements so it carries over to a full throw is KEY TO COACHING!

Let me tell you....

One of the biggest problems I see with many athlete who come to me for coaching is that when they show me their half turn drill -

the upper body opens first and the lower body follows.

Once the upper body is ahead , an athlete will try to close the arm to compensate and that is your DISTANCE KILLER ☠️

You want to push off the lower body and hold

  • In the shot- we call it the hold and fold
  • In the discus throw- we call it hold the chest and fold at the elbow

(see video again for details

If the upper body is ahead, then you're in big time trouble, and you'll constantly be practicing the WRONG THING!

Opening the upper body first and having the lower body follow, is a  chain reaction you DON'T want.

It will kill your throw every time.

It's simply physics.
